REVIEW: The Kirov, The Lowry, Thursday

WHEN the curtain rose at the Lowry last Thursday evening, a just-audible sigh of pure contentment could be heard throughout the stalls.
The beautiful tableau of white-clad dancers in a wooded glade that greeted the audience was a sign of the perfection to follow.
Opening the Gala Programme was the storyless one-act ballet Chopiniana (sometimes known as Les Sylphides) which was delightfully graceful and a lovely way to start the night. Up next was a dazzling divertissement of four pas de deux.
Performed on an empty stage, it was a reminder that when the standard of ballet is this high, no gimmicks or lavish sets are required.
The night ended on a high with the famous Kingdom of the Shades sequence from La Bayadère.
The whole company was so good it seems almost unfair to single out individuals, but Anton Korsakov really grabbed the eye with his strength and stage presence in two of the pas de deux.
And the flame-haired and long-limbed Ekaterina Kondaurova was in hauntingly graceful form as the tragic Nikiya in the Kingdom of the Shades.
It was, quite simply, a mesmerising night and a privilege to be there.
