MUSICAL: Evita, Opera House, 23 to 28 June

A NEW touring production of one of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s most popular shows is stopping in Manchester next week.

Evita tells the true story of Eva Peron, an actress who married the man who became president of Argentina. Recently revived to great acclaim in London, this is an all-new production that stars West End regular Louise Dearman as Eva and Any Dream Will Do star Seamus Cullen as Che.

The all-sung show features some of Lloyd Webber and Rice’s greatest songs, including Oh, What a Circus, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Buenos Aires and the classic showstopper Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.

Metromagazine spoke to Louise shortly after rehearsals began and she said she couldn’t wait to put her mark on the character of Eva Peron.

Louise said: "There are not many roles like this for women – every female actress I know would die to play it. I’m looking forward to it so much.

"There’s an awful lot to live up to, though, and I’m doing my research and homework."

Eva Peron was famous for her style, and according to Louise the show really reflects this – at one point she has an eight-second costume change.

She said: "They’ve really gone to town with the costumes and wigs."

But it isn’t all furs and glamour, as Louise explained: "Eva Peron went from being a young and youthful girl, dreaming in Buenos Aires to taking on a politically powerful role as first lady of Argentina.

"It’s a very intense show. The music is very emotional and dramatic."

Lousie says she can’t wait for Evita to come to Manchester, having enjoyed her previous visits here with shows like Guys and Dolls and Grease.

She said: "Manchester is one of my favourite cities. I’m very familiar with it, especially the shopping!"

Louise is enjoying working with Seamus, saying: "Seamus is doing a fantastic job. People are quick to jump in and judge people in these reality shows, but he has a strong voice and is going to surprise people.

"He’s a great company guy, too – he makes everyone laugh."

Evita runs from Monday, June 23 to Saturday, June 28. For tickets call 0800 587 5007.
