Days out: Where to go this weekend
by Riazat Butt23/ 6/2005
DIDSBURY is in the throes of its second annual music festival,
organised by volunteers from Didsbury Rotary Club.
The festival culminates on Sunday with a party in
Didsbury
Park, where there will be live music, childrens
activities, food stalls, a bouncy castle and the chance to win a
car.
More than 5,000 people attended the party last year and this year
promises to be just as popular.
Tickets are just £1, with all the money raised going to St. Ann's
Hospice, Make a Wish Foundation and Manchester's Royal School for
the Deaf.
The party starts at 1pm and finishes at 7pm.

On Saturday, young and old have the chance to try their hand at
sailing at
Sale Water Park.
Those taking part in this one-day course will try out the new and
exciting Laser Funboats and the world famous Laser Picos in a fun
but informative environment.
Hands on experience will whet your appetite and give you a safe
introduction to the world of dinghy sailing. Suitable for ages nine
and over.
The course starts at 10am and finishes at 4.00pm. Price per person
is £40.

If you thought your only encounter with sheep and cows would be at
a summer barbecue, then think again.
The magnificent
Heaton Park, in Higher Blackley,
is home to a menagerie of animals.
A herd of Highland cattle and flock of Hebridean sheep bring a
flavour of the Scottish moors, while a visit to the farm and animal
centres provides kids with a wonderful opportunity of seeing
animals at close quarters.
There are pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, chickens and alapacas.
In the animal centre, rabbits and guinea pigs can be handled and at
certain times of day the poultry can be fed. There is a play area
too. It sounds so cute I want to go.
The animal centre is open from 10am until 8pm. Call 0161
773 1085 for more information.
Other activities at Heaton Park include pitch and putt,
horseriding, stately homes and a boating lake.
As you'd expect from a 640-acre site, there are places to eat,
drink, park and wee. A true day out if ever there was one.
Stretford Pageant is the annual Rose Queen
festival that is held on the last Saturday in June. The event has
been going for the last 80 years, taking in Old Trafford, Gorse
Hill and Stretford.
The street procession is somewhat shorter than it used to be but it
is still a big and well supported event.
There will be a a carnival, a fun fair and a giant carboot sale.
There will also be a street collection in aid of Pendlebury
Childrens Hospital cancer and leukemia fund.
The event starts at 1pm.
Make like Captain Jack Sparrow and be a pirate for the day. On
Sunday from 1pm,
Walton Park in Brooklands is the
setting for a free afternoon of fun including a treasure hunt,
super inflatables and a bouncy castle.
This event leads to my favourite joke of the moment. Q: Why are
pirates called pirates? A: Because they
aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhh!
This weekend marks the final two days of Refugee Week 2005. On
Sunday the
Imperial War Museum North is hosting
performances from cross-cultural music groups Sambangra and
Heritage Survival to reflect the contribution of different cultures
to UK music.

Put on your seafaring hat for some watery fun. The Mersey Ferries
Ship Canal Cruise departs from Salford Quays on Sunday at 10.00 am
for a six-and-a-half hour ride and talk cruise. There is a
two-and-a-half hour stop in Liverpool, but don't let that put you
off.
The cost is £29 per person and includes a coach back from
Liverpool.
