Days out: bonfire night and the Christmas lights switch-on
Conrad Astley4/11/2005
IT was 400 years ago this weekend that Guy Fawkes and his
cronies attempted to blow up Parliament.
The anniversary means organisations across the region will be
pulling out all the stops to make sure it'll be a November 5 to
remember, and there will be dozens of fireworks extravaganzas held
over the next few days.
One of the biggest events will see £10,000 of fireworks lighting up
the skies of east Manchester, after three hours of non-stop action
featuring stock car racing at
Belle Vue Stadium on
Kirkmanshulme Lane.
The night, which will feature over 100 racers, as well as a
death-defying demolition derby, will start at 6pm tomorrow
(Saturday), with fireworks at 9.30pm. Adult tickets cost £12 while
children pay £5, and family tickets are available for £30.
A bonfire will be lit at
Platt Fields Park in
Rusholme at 7.30pm tonight (Friday) while a fireworks display will
be held at 7pm. Call 224 2902 for more information.
Another event will be held at
Wythenshawe Park
tomorrow (Saturday) beginning at 8pm. Call 998 2117.
The Trafford mayor's charity event is taking place at
Abbotsfield Park off Chasen Road in Flixton, and
will feature a BBC GMR roadshow, including DJ Mike Shaft who will
be lighting the bonfire.
The event starts at 5.30pm tomorrow (Saturday) with the fire lit at
7pm and a fireworks display at 8.30pm.
Tickets cost £4 for adults, including entry into a draw to win a
£250 holiday voucher, and £2.50 for concessions. Call Alan Vernon
on 747 8560.
Another event, organised by Stockport Council and the town's Rotary
Club, is being held at
Heaton Norris Recreation
Ground from 6pm tonight (Friday).
The event costs £2.50 for adults, while children will get in free
with adults. Free parking is provided at the Egerton Street and
Heaton Lane car parks.
The Cheadle-based Together Trust - the biggest children's charity
in the North West - is holding its 22nd bonfire event on
Saturday.
The organisation, which has existed for 135 years and recently
changed its name from the Boys and Girls Welfare Society, attracted
3,500 visitors to its bonfire last year and hopes to make this
weekend's event even busier.
As well as the giant bonfire, there will be two firework displays
at
Schools Hill in the suburb - one for younger
children starting at 7pm, and a larger display at 8pm. There will
also be fairground rides and games.
Family tickets, available by calling the charity on 283 4848, cost
£10, while adult tickets are £4 and children's are £2. Children
under five go in for free, while all money raised will go to
charity.
Another wanting to travel further afield can visit north
Manchester's event held in
Heaton Park at 7.30pm
on Saturday, or Salford's event in
Buile Hill Park
off Eccles Old Road at 7pm on Saturday.
And once Halloween and Bonfire Night are out of the way, the
festive season slowly gets under way, and in Manchester it will
officially start next week. The city's
Christmas lights
switch-on takes place next Thursday (November 10) with
former Blue heart throb Lee Ryan topping the bill, singing numbers
from his new solo album.
Alex the lion and the penguins from animated family film Madagascar
will also be on the stage in Albert Square, along with the cast of
the Peter Pan musical at the Palace Theatre.
Lucy-Jo Hudson and Faith Brown, starring as Cinderella and her
wicked stepmother at The Lowry, will also be appearing, as well as
opera star Jon Christos performing.
The show will appear at a special stage in Albert Square
from 6-7pm on November 10, ending with a fireworks
finale.
