MP and students in rape letter row

Laura Thistlethwaite
6/ 3/2008

A row has erupted between a student union representative and MP John Leech over a letter sent following the rape of a young woman in Withington.

Women’s officer Elizabeth Somerville has accused John Leech of blaming students for making too much noise, meaning residents take less notice if they hear screams or shouting, in a personal letter he sent to the NUS campaigner.

This is a serious matter, and it is disgraceful that it should be used for political purposes. I for one agree with Mr Leech.

A newspaper article has just been published about how a rape occurred, seven people heard her screams, but no-one thought it was necessary to do anything (see http://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/hounslowchiswick/display.var.2096313.0.student_raped_polish_woman_for_not_showing_him_respect.php)

I think we would all take AJ's comments more seriously if he or she stopped hiding behind a nick name, and didn't bash off a quick, grammatically incorrect, vitriolic comment on his or her return from the pub (their comment posted at 23:19)

I'm sorry but Elizabeth Sommerville is anything but a "Labour" activist.

She is a fiercely independent Student Officer who is a feminist and strong advocate above all else. On campus she works with female Lib Dem activists (so much so that she backed one to take on a major role this year) and I know plenty of students of all political colours who are outraged with the latest nonsense from John Leech.

He likes to claim the student vote won him the election on top up fees and Iraq however he will stop at nothing in posturing to the worst of the community.

Last year's Students in Withington meeting "Heaven or Hell?" showed where the Lib Dems stand on students in Manchester. Quick to take their votes but just as quick to sell them out to Daily Mail reading NIMBY morons! His complains about student noise illustrate that he is nothing more than a jumped up Cllr.

I am a student at Manchester Uni and it seems to me John Leech is merely highlighting what happens to be a problem in many student areas. Why are people trying to turn a very serious subject, into a political argument? He has raised a constituent's concerns with a representative of the Uni in order to try and work to solve a serious problem. He is not blaming students for rape...that is such a horrific accusation. I suppose it's just a coincidence that the women's welfare office he raised the matter with, is a Labour activist? Just how low will these people stoop?

John Leech offers a stark contrast with Lucy Powell who this week devotes her Guardian blog to tackling violence against women.

Incidents like this reveal the pair's differing priorities. One is working for an end to violence, while the other is more interested in rolling over for a quiet night's sleep.

Whether or not she should have disclosed the content of the letter is debatable but I happen to agree with him. I'm so used to screaming, shouting or singing from rowdy people (students or otherwise) that I tend to try and ignore it now and get back to sleep. Obviously someone screaming on their own would be another matter but as noise has got so commonplace it would be easy to disregard as nothing more than clowning about.

Why is he "ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED"? If the person concerned wished to expose the unsympathetic and callous attitude of a local MP who should be caring for his constituents, not condeming them, she has the absoute right to do so. Surely he is not so naive to think that any letter he sends out is open to exposure?
