Swimmers' bare cheek leaves parents fuming
3/ 4/2008
PARENTS are refusing to let their children swim in Levenshulme baths – because it’s being hired for naked male swimming sessions.
Over the past nine months the pool has been hired out on a Thursday evening for private naturist group called Naked Swim.
Although I would like to keep an open mind from the point of view of the mothers, I can't help but find myself confused at the real reason for their objections. Hygiene? Really? At what point have they forgotten that a swimming pool is essentially a giant bath that anyone can get in and the only clothing requirement is a skimpy lycra suit? We all must remember the obligatory verrucae initiation from our youth. And what about mother and baby sessions? If hygiene is really an issue, then surely the targets should be those with the least bladder control.
It all seems rather ridiculous. Pools are well aware of issues surrounding public safety which is why they take the time to chlorinate the water. These sessions, I understand, are private and take place away from other swimmers and at times when the second pool is adults only. Why mothers would object to this I do not understand. From a personal point of view, I see no reason to instil the idea in children that our naked bodies are something to be ashamed of, or that it is okay to be intolerate because others are more comfortable with their nudity than we are. In this case the children may not have even been aware of any issue until it was raised. So what good has this actually done?
Really?

"I am concerned about the hygiene aspect."
Seriously? Fluid dynamics, anyone? Hell, ever heard of shrinkage? That wouldn't happen if things stayed dry under the trunks.
Over-protective twit.
