WORK on the new Chorlton spur of the Metrolink tram could be underway in weeks, the Reporter can reveal.

Councillor Val Stevens – deputy leader of Manchester City Council – has confirmed that work will begin on the ‘Little Bang’ extension before the summer is out – 16 years after talks to bring Metrolink to Chorlton were first held.

As a cyclist, I'm a bit concerned that the extension to Chorlton will undermine the excellent off-road Fallowfield Loop cycle way, which currently links via Corkland Road with the route through to Sale Water Park, etc,

While I agree with Doug in general about Beeching, the cuttings he mentions through Alex Rd/Levenshulme have been cleared and now form part of the Fallowfield Loop cycleway; there's now a Sainsbury's blocking the old line at Fallowfield, so that was never going to be viable as a Metrolink extension.

BRILLIANT NEWS but that Mr BEECHING FELLOW Eh what was he thinking about when he closed the old branch line from Central station -Firswood - Chorlton - Withington and West Didsbury - Didsbury - Heaton Mersey - Tiviot Dale and on to Derbyshire - Bredbury Romiley - Marple - Notts - - St Pancras? Just after Chorlton where there was a coal yard the line branched off for Alexander Road,Fallowfield, Levenshulme south,Guide bridge etc. most of the cuttings are still there but by heck it will be an expense re- cutting them felling overgrown bushes and shrubs plus quite large tree's -- BEECHING WAS AN IDIOT A MAN WITH LITTLE OR NO FORESIGHT!
