Mancunian Expats
13/ 6/2005
ARE you a former resident of South Manchester who has moved abroad and who wants to get back in touch with people still living in the town? Do you know of friends or family who have moved overseas and you want to try and track them down? Well here's your chance ...
Your publicity and marketing should try to push the "ex-pats" column a bit more. The last post was in January, and it is now almost April. No new posts, and no replies whatsoever. Any ideas??????

I was born in withington hospital on May 7th 1946 and was brought up at 5 Eddisbury Ave in Withington I attended Old Moat primary/junior/and senior schools and left in 1961.My schoolday pals on our estate were Brian Holt R.I.P. Terry Broderick R.I.P. Dave Webb (now living in Darlington) Keith Doyle,Roger Baker, (Macclesfield) Jeffrey Coulthard,Steve Harrison (Canada) Joey and Peter Hart,Brian Sharples R.I.P. Alan and Ian Vickers,Terry Daly R.I.P. Bob Harris,Billy Longden( Dukinfield) apologies to ones I have forgot or not mentioned.Sadly as time went on we all went our different ways but the memories linger on. I still socialise in the area and frequent pubs such as the Orion in Withington and the Nelson in Didsbury village and on one or two occasions have bumped into Keith Doyle who lived at No 16 Eddisbury Ave.we were all football daft and used to play matches on a 'back croft between Hassall Ave and Rudheath accessable from Rainford, Bromborough and Woodhall avenues we also had Hough End fields they were great days although we didn't think that at the time it was just a process of growing up where we thought it would never end, they did and all we do now is look back and in some ways thats good I'm lucky however because I still have contacts in the area. However as the years do roll on things dont all change for the better and on recently observing 'our' shops which were on Mauldeth rd west on the corner of Princess road during the fifties and sixties it was all family shops where each shop had its own character of wooden fronts with large glass windows some such as the greengrocers had white paint offering spuds and fruit and vegatables at cut price,Deardens the first shop was a great example of this with their lamb chops and braised meat not forgetting the old cow heel pie funnilly enough it is a dental practice now. along the shops after there was Hancocks the greengrocers,Mayes the grocers.a barber shop called THE ONLY JONES,Clarks Newsagents ran by a Mr Ashton. an entry followed which is still there and led down to the rear of the shops and on the other side was an outdoor beer licence,Latewards Chemist and around the corner where now is a doctors surgery was a Trustee's savings bank,Mcdonalds confectionary shop, a cobblers shop (now a barbers I believe) a bookies then and still is today then a hardware shop which has been long gone, Mark Green the tailor and finally a bike shop that too long gone where I can recall my dad buying a bike for 5shilling a week payable by a card at the shop no finance company involved and then the the hill on Princess road. Now the shops on Mauldeth road have lost all their identity, character, and charisma. I wonder if any of the old residents of the area I write about will read my comments and should they wish to contact e then they are most welcome. ted.knott2@ntlworld.com or tedknott3@yahoo.com thank you.

I look forward to reading the comments of Manchester ex pats each week.
My name is Ken Shaw and I moved to Aus in 1966. Brought up in Burnage, Chorley-wood Ave and attended Green End and later didsbury Central.
Did my apprenticeship at Met Vicks in Trafford Park and then moved overseas.
would like to hear from any one that lived round Western Circle from 1941 to 66 and remembers me or can relate to stories of Manchester around that period. Still am a mad keen City supporter so that may limit my contacts.

I posted earlier, but have sinced changed my email address. My maiden name is Christine Havercroft and I lived in Western Circle. I was born and raised in Burnage, attended Green End and Parrswood High School. I left for the States in 1975, when I was 20, but have really happy memories of Burnage and Didsbury. Would love to hear from Janice McGrail or Val Woods. Sure they've been married a long time, but would love hearing from anyone else who may remember me or I went to school with. Hi, I lived in Burnage and surrounding areas until 1968 and would love to know what happened to Edith Turner and Peter Healey, both from Shawbrook Road. As kids we all played together and somehow lost touch after we finished school. I have kept in touch with Barbara Williams so if anyone out there knows of these two people I would appreciate some info.

Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
