FROST’S the Butchers in Chorlton have already given plastic bags the chop.
The family-run butchers on Chorlton precinct have introduced their very own branded canvas bags to combat the high number of plastic ones that were being handed out to customers.
Frost’s have revealed that in just one year they dished out 85,000 plastic bags to shoppers.
Owner Jack Frost said: “We were giving out such large numbers of plastic bags to customers and we realised that none of it was to anyone’s advantage.
“The plastic bags were expensive for us to buy and were doing nothing to help the environment, so we decided to swap to the canvas bags.
“Some customers do still use plastic bags. However they are reused ones that they bring into the shop themselves.
“At last it seems that people are taking some responsibility and not just using plastic bags and immediately discarding them.
“The majority of our customers use the canvas bags that we supply and we have had no problems at all.
“In fact, it is going really well and has proved to be quite popular. It is great to see something like this take off and for everybody in the local community to come together.”
Frost’s now buy their canvas bags in batches of 500 bags at a time from their supplier.
