Chief constable found dead

11/ 3/2008

MICHAEL Todd, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, has been found dead.

The body of the 50-year-old officer was discovered near Llanberis in North Wales. He went missing on Monday while on an off-duty trip to Snowdonia.

News of his death stunned officers at Greater Manchester Police, where he had been Chief Constable since 2002.

Deputy Chief Constable Dave Whatton told reporters outside GMP headquarters: "Yesterday our Chief Constable Michael Todd was off duty walking in Snowdonia. Last night we became concerned for his welfare and as a result searches started to find him.

"These searches have continued today and unfortunately this afternoon a body has been found. I believe that it is Michael but we have not been able to formal identify him at this time.

"The weather conditions are extremely bad at the moment and are hindering our inquiries. There will be a coroner's investigation which means I can't say anymore at this time.

"As you can imagine all of his friends and colleagues are extremely upset. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family, and I would ask that they be left in peace to come to terms with this tragic shock."

Flags were lowered to half mast over the force’s headquarters at Chester House.

Mr Todd, a father of three, enjoyed a high national profile as the head of country’s second-largest police force and was vice president of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

He joined Essex Police in 1976 and served as both a uniformed officer and a detective.

As an Inspector, he served at Bethnal Green in London, as part of the first management exchange scheme between Essex Police and the Metropolitan Police Service.

He was appointed Assistant Chief Constable in Nottinghamshire in 1995. His role included operational policing, management and technical services. He reorganised the Personnel and Training Department and developed strategies on human resources and information technology.

In 1998, he was appointed as the Deputy Assistant Commissioner responsible for policing the North West Area of London.

In 2000, following his promotion to Assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police, he was responsible for Territorial Policing, covering all 32 London Boroughs. He has led many high profile operations and events, including the policing of May Day demonstrations, Notting Hill Carnival, the Queen's Jubilee celebrations and the Met's Street Crime initiative.

He joined Greater Manchester Police as Chief Constable on 1st October 2002

The Police saved me from a good kicking when I was younger (in Rochdale Centre). I again offer my commiserations to Mr. Todd, his family and the force. Quite frankly I don't give a damm what coppers do off duty.
