School’s sevens success

27/ 3/2008

MANCHESTER Grammar School’s young rugby players proved they were some of the best in Europe by lifting the prestigious Berkhamstead Sevens title.

Over 30 schools representing all four home nations, as well as France and Italy, were in North London for the invitation tournament which attracts top rugby-playing schools from the independent and state sectors.

Marshalled by man-of-the-tournament Matthew Tulley, MGS’ under-13s (pictured) brushed aside Whitgift College 38-5 in the final, having defeated Dulwich College 35-8 in the semi-final on their way to scoring 256 points in the competition, conceding only 29.

They followed that with victory in the Bradford Grammar School sevens competition, beating Wakefield’s Queen Elizabeth School 22-14 in an end-to-end final.

Their squad is: Chris Edge, Tom Hamilton, Sam Hunter, Cameron Nield, Tom Benson, Will Holbrook, Alex Hughes, Zeik Lee, Dougie Loynes and Matthew Tulley.

MGS head of rugby Steve Swindells said: "These two tournament wins constitute some of the best performances from a young MGS team in recent years and should bode well for a strong first XV in years to come."
