Doctors close to surgery deal
3/ 4/2008
DOCTORS say they are close to confirming a deal to build a new medical centre in Burnage.
Solicitors for Tesco, the council and Kingsway Medical Centre say they are working flat out to ensure that an agreement can be reached for a new surgery that is due to be built on Burnage Lane.
If the deadline for a legal contract by April 4 is not met, Tesco could walk away from the deal by paying a penalty to the council of £607,000. But council bosses say they could give them more times to tie up the deal.
Neil Skitt, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said: "This surgery is definitely going to happen.
"Our solicitors are doing all they can to finalise legal issues and we are in the process of appointing a building contractor to carry out the work."
The new surgery was promised by Tesco as part of planning permission it gained from the council, to build a 24-hour store on nearby Lane End Road in Burnage.
Construction work started on April 4, 2005, triggering a three-year deadline as stipulated under the permission it gained. A new surgery would house extra consulting rooms and nurses’ treatment rooms on the ground floor, making it accessible for elderly and immobile patients.
