My girl will kill herself without a padded room
Laura Thistlethwaite15/ 5/2008
A SINGLE mum is desperate for a padded room in her home to protect her severely disabled daughter from injury.
Mum-of-three Diane Kieran, 42, has battled for more than a year to arrange a meeting with social workers to help eight-year-old Paris, who has autism, severe ADHD and Pica – a disorder which means she tries to consume non-edible things like soil, bleach and washing powder.
After a date was finally set to organise the ‘safe room’, which would stop Paris banging her head on the walls, her social worker cancelled because he was going on holiday.
Diane, of Broseley Avenue, Didsbury, said: "I’m absolutely furious. We’ve been trying to get a safe place - which is basically a padded room - installed for when I’m cooking because Paris will grab the pans and try to put her hands in them.
"She has fits when she will repeatedly smash her head against the walls until she bleeds.
"She’s going to kill herself if things continue to carry on this way."
Adapting a room in Diane’s home would cost around £3,000; it must be approved by social service managers, representatives from the council’s Equipment and Adaptations department, Paris’ paediatrician and school teachers.
Diane added: "The last meeting we had was a year ago and I knew that a year down the line I would be in the same situation.
"I can’t put Paris upstairs anymore because she bounces so hard I’m scared she will come through the floor.
"I have to buy her a new bed every six weeks because she breaks it so frequently.
"I want her at home with me, but I feel like I’m not getting any help from anyone. If my oldest daughter is out, then I can’t cook or go to the toilet because I have to watch Paris every single minute."
Diane has a son, Bradley, 20, who is also autistic and living in sheltered housing, and another daughter, Chelsea, 15, who is currently taking her GCSEs at Barlow RC High School.
Paris attends The Birches, a primary school in West Didsbury for children with severe learning difficulties, and spends two days a week at a respite centre in Cheadle.
John Edwards, Deputy Director Children’s Services, Manchester City Council, said:
"We very much regret the cancellation of the planned meeting with Mrs Keiran – multi agency meetings should go ahead except in the most exceptional circumstances. We are very sympathetic to the family’s needs and should be meeting with them again in the next couple of weeks."
