Stuart Calton: We need a local supermarket
Tesco for Levenshulme
Susannah Wright22/ 5/2008
RESIDENTS and traders are giving a cautious welcome to the news that a Tesco Express could be coming to Levenshulme.
The retail giant has applied for a trading licence - to include alcohol - for the former Kwik Save site on Stockport Road. And while residents have until June 10 to raise any objections to the council, many see it as a hoped-for kick-start to regeneration plans.
Stuart Calton, who lives with his partner, Marie-Angelique, and their two children on Kersh Avenue, is one of the Friends Of Levenshulme group, which has been campaigning for a new supermarket since Kwik Save shut down 18 months ago.
He said: "We’ve been campaigning now for a long time because we really need a supermarket that people can walk to.
"Of course, Tesco does have a reputation for having a dominant presence, so I hope it wouldn’t lead to the smaller shops being shut down. But that didn’t happen with Kwik Save, so we’d have to remain confident that didn’t happen."
Charlotte Smith, a youth justice worker and mum to a toddler who lives on Greenway Avenue, said: "I would have preferred it if it was a different supermarket because south Manchester is in danger of becoming ‘Tesco-town’, but we do need a supermarket and hopefully it might anchor Stockport Road and bring shoppers back." Tesco was not available for comment as the Reporter went to press.
