Thousands enjoy a festival of fun

THE streets were awash with colour for the 29th annual Didsbury Festival.

Paraders marched, danced and played their way through the village to the Didsbury Park arena, which attracted around 10,000 visitors during the day.

Saturday’s event featured cheerleading from Didsbury Children’s Theatre and Broad Oak School, the Third Davyhulme Scout and Guide Band, Cavendish School Samba Band and a tag rugby tournament.

Scores of charity stalls set up camp on the site selling food, toys, jewellery and bric-a-brac.

Canine capers were abound as the dog show proved to be its usual success. Judged by Jean Leigh, the pooches to take home the prizes included a West Highland Terrier, ‘Frankie’, who won Waggiest Tail and a 15-month-old American Bulldog, Ruby, was officially the Dog With the Saddest Eyes.

Organiser Jean Bridson said: "It was a really great day, the procession was probably my favourite part - it was lovely. Didsbury Festival is always a fantastic event which draws in a great crowd every year and I think this year we exceeded all expectations, to see the arena packed out was absolutely fantastic."

The best stall award went to Manchester Dogs' Home, who had a colourful display of toys, games and a tombola.

Yep...the festival was brilliant....I walked with one of the local schools, who also had a stall around the football pitch. The kids loved it.

The only blot on the landscape is the presence of the dreadful fair...overpriced rides, some of which look quite dangerous. God knows how much money they take but this is cash which would otherwise go to much worthier local causes. Is it not time we just stopped having the fairground.....have some locally organised fun (bouncy castles, punch and judy, coconut shies, beat the goalie etc.....for modest cost and local good causes.

Perhaps the organisers could tell us openly how much the fairground stallholdres pay the Festival committee?

Anyway, fairground apart, the event was well worthwhile...so well done schools, scouts, churches etc etc
