FOR many girls ‘the boy next door’ is the fictional embodiment of a clean-living Mr Right.
But for Ellen McHugh he is a reality - and she’s planning on keeping hold of him.
Ellen, 21, fell in love with neighbour Chris Vernon across the garden fence and now the pair are planning their wedding. Chris and Ellen fell for each other while living right next door to each other at 61 and 63 Broadhill Road in Burnage.
And while they spent most of their teenage years trying to hide their secret crushes on each other – they’re now engaged and looking forward to planning their dream wedding. Chris – a former Burnage High pupil – moved in next door to his future wife when he was just 17, when he left his mum’s house, also in Burnage, to live with his auntie and uncle. It wasn’t until Chris reached the age of 20 that he finally plucked up the courage to ask Ellen out on their very first date.
Since getting together they have never spent more than a day away from each other and Ellen plans to stay in Manchester when she goes to university in September. They recently moved in together on Colwyn Avenue in Ladybarn with their two-year-old daughter, Olivia.
Ellen – who used to go to Parrs Wood High School – said: "I’ve known Chris all of my life and people find it really romantic when we tell them that we grew up next door to each other. It’s a dream come true."
Chris, 24, who works for Virgin Media, said: "I really love Ellen and so does my family."
