Police hunt for Didsbury scrawler

POLICE are hunting a scrawler who has left a series of cryptic messages around south Manchester.

The scrawler has vandalised a series of buildings around Didsbury and Withington, often emblazoning with them with quotes from obscure poets, and in one case, a lyric from a George Michael song.

Most of the attacks have been carried out in trademark blue paint.

The Christie Hospital was the latest victim of his 'work'. One of the doors of the hospital's Paterson Institute on Wilmslow Road was daubed with the words of Irish-born poet, Sheila Wingfield: 'Unexplained in the salt meadow lay the dead bird'.

The first spate of messages appeared in Didsbury village when Didsbury Baptist Church, the railway bridge on School Lane and Boots The Chemist, on Wilmslow Road, were all vandalised.

The mystery artist left the words, 'I'm Meek!! And I'm here for my inheritance' painted on the back walls of the Beaver Road Church.

He attempted to show off his knowledge of literature with a quote from Hungarian poet, Zsuzsa Rakovszky and her poem, They Were Burning Dead Leaves on the side of Boots.

In the same paint used in the church attack, the words read: 'To have this again, just this, just the once more, I would sink below autumnal earth and place my right hand in your hand like a shadow.'

But the scrawler also has more popular tastes.

A message left on a bridge on School Lane was taken from George Michael's song, Careless Whisper.

It read: 'Guilty feet have got no rhythm.' Didsbury Civic Society member, Geoff Bridson, said: "This person obviously has a great knowledge of literature, but this sort of behaviour is unacceptable and must not be carried out on the area's buildings. It is obviously amusing to him but is unpleasant for the rest of us."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "GMP will not tolerate any acts of vandalism including graffiti. This type of activity ruins the environment for local residents. We urge people to report any incidents of this nature and we will continue to use all the powers available to us and our partners to put a stop to it."

Well if you're going to write graffiti, better to make it a sample of lovely or thought-provoking words, instead of the usual juvenile illiterate fare: case in point 'Junglist Platton' daubed on a building in Whalley Range. And on the subject of bad spelling/grammar: what about the off-licence 'Booze 'R' Us'? I mean, for God's sake, if you are going to set up a business, at least get someone who knows language properly choose the name.

Hmm not so sure intoducing one person to a poem is worth it though! There are plenty of other ways they could do it.
