Ambulance service to receive parapacs

3/ 1/2002

The cash was raised after a year of fund raising around the city with the Children's Hospitals Appeals Trust.

Now 48 of Manchester's emergency ambulances have been equipped with parapacs and another 60 with tympanic thermometers.

The parapacs contain ventilation and resuscitation kits that let ambulance staff monitor children's oxygen levels.

The thermometers - used in the outer ear - give an accurate temperature within three seconds, vital as children under four do not control their body temperature as well as adults.

The appeal will end in March when the final batch of equipment will be delivered.

GMAS chief executive John Burnside said: "I would like to thank both the people of Manchester and the Children's Hospitals Appeal Trust for their generosity and support.

"This hi-tech equipment is a huge boost to the service and is of great benefit to our ambulance staff.

"The equipment is specifically designed for ambulance crews and enables us to give children and babies the very best possible chance of survival."
