Can you find George's descendants?

3/ 1/2002

George Beatson Blair was a wealthy cotton heir who died in 1940 and left no family to inherit his magnificent collection.

The gallery was only able to take 500 of the most impressive pieces due to a lack of space. They have been in storage for 60 years.

After a £35 million refurbishment, the gallery is set to reopen in May and display the collection for the first time, so staff are now trying to find out more about their benefactor.

Catherine Baum, curator of exhibitions and displays, said: "This is a very impressive collection, especially as it was put together by just one person but we know so little about the man himself.

"Ideally, we'd like to find descendants of the Blair family or their staff or people who remember the house to help build up our archive of knowledge about a very important benefactor."

Anyone who can help in the search for information can all Catherine, pictured above, on 235 8812 or email her at c.baum@notes.manchester.gov.uk.
