Dinner lady dishes out lessons
20/12/2002
A DINNER lady has returned to her old school - but now as a
teacher.
Inam Al Ali was a successful businesswoman in Iraq, but fled when
trouble erupted in her country.
She had to turn her back on her success there and take whatever job
she could in Manchester.
Now, having spent time as a general support assistant and technical
support teacher, Inam, 60, is going back to what she knows best and
offering classes at Levenshulme High School to businesspeople
interested in working with companies in the Middle East.
Inam, who now has children born in Britain, said: "The situation in
my country deteriorated so I left and as it got worse we decided to
stay here.
"I have experience in the Middle East as a businesswoman and have
studied teaching here, so I am fully qualified for the role.
"When I came here because of the regime, I took a teaching
qualification and wanted to be a further education teacher and I'm
looking forward to teaching the course. I'm very proud and happy to
be doing what I know I am good at."
Inam has been at Levenshulme High School for four years and will
front the two-hour lessons every Monday from January 6.
Pupils at the school, a specialist language college offering
Chinese Mandarin, Persian and Urdu among more traditional foreign
language studies, will also benefit from the new course.
A school spokesman said: "The classes are open to businesses in
Manchester who feel they may benefit from learning Arabic.
"The classes accommodate the increasing desire to communicate well
with Arab nations for business.
"Students and local people have expressed great enthusiasm for the
project and staff are confident that the sessions will be of
benefit to all."
Pupils from across Manchester can also take advantage of the
classes.
They run on Monday and Thursday afternoons, when Levenshulme High
pupils can attend and again on Saturday when they are opened up to
pupils from other secondary schools.
