Remember the horses at Christmas

CHRISTMAS is a busy time for the police and none more so than for the force's four-legged crimefighting team.

Police horses are saddling up for a hectic spell of street patrols and football matches while most of us will be enjoying the festive period.

But staff and officers at Greater Manchester Police's Chorlton-based stable headquarters are making sure the horses are the mane attraction in the present stakes.

Stockings full of horse treats are being hung up at the Hough End stables as Santa dishes out the goodies.

Chief Inspector Jenny Pidd said: "It is a busy time for us all and we want to make sure that it is a merry Christmas
in the stables.

"All the horses will receive a Christmas treat as recognition of their hard work during the past year.

"It is not just the horses that will be working throughout the holiday period. Our dedicated team of grooms will be here every day, including Christmas morning, making sure the horses are ready for action."

Anne Firth, a senior groom, added: "It would be nice if people could spare a thought for us and the horses when they are opening their presents on Christmas morning."

Greater Manchester Police has around 40 horses force-wide and is the largest provincial mounted unit.

The unit have assisted with searches for missing people, policing major sporting events and tackling public disorder.
