Farewell to St Bernard's headmaster

25/ 7/2003

THE last day of term was a particularly poignant one for a popular Burnage headteacher.

Thomas Fanning has been head at St Bernard's RC Primary since 1981, and when school broke up for the summer on Friday, for him it was the last time.

After 22 years overseeing the education of Burnage youngsters Mr Fanning has retired.

His final day at the school was marked with a huge farewell banner and balloons, and a number of presents from pupils and staff - and lots of good wishes.

Parent Irene Smith said: "Mr Fanning has been a fantastic head. All the children absolutely adore him."

Irene, whose children Daniel, 16, Lauren, 13, and Dillon, five, have all been taught by Mr Fanning added: "He will be very missed and we all wish him the best of luck. St Bernard's has been lucky to have him."
