‘My race-hate hell’

A MAN whose house has been vandalised eight times in the last 16 months believes the attacks are racially motivated.

During the latest incident in the early hours of Sunday, October 8, Anayat Ali's property on Stanton Avenue in West Didsbury was targeted, as he and his family were inside.

Mr Ali, 53, said: "I was upstairs in my bedroom and I heard shouting outside - they were calling out black b******. I looked out of the window and saw three lads trying to pull down my fence and wall, and afterwards they ran off towards Darley Avenue, so I rang the police."

Mr Ali claims the youths were in their late teens to early twenties, and that he did not feel able to go outside and chase after them.

He said: "I feel very bad because we've had several incidents in the last year, and I think they're racially-motivated. Last year three people were tried and they were fined."

He added: "It used to be that they would pull off a bit of the fence or take up some plants, but this time they've pulled down the whole of the fence and part of the wall too. It's very frightening." West Didsbury councillor Mark Clayton said: "There have been a number incidents of vandalism to Mr Ali's property. I was actually there on one occasion last June when the police arrested someone who was on his roof."

Chief Inspector Catherine Hankinson of West Didsbury police said: "We are working closely with Mr Ali regarding the incidents at his property and are committed to finding a way to resolve the problems that he is experiencing.

"Vandalism and harassment of any kind will not be tolerated by Greater Manchester Police and we are fully aware of the effects these incidents are having on him and his family. Our community and race relations officer and a hate-crime worker from Witness Support have been to see Mr Ali and discuss his concerns.

"As a result of these visits, we have offered to place a CCTV camera on his premises and suggested that a crime reduction advisor assesses his property."

My colleague at work has had her home and car vandalised repeatedly by teenage yobs, and has also suffered verbal abuse from them, mainly concentrating on the fact that she is a woman of larger stature. This has been going on for a long time. She has called the police for help, but they haven't offered to set up CCTV surveillance at her home. The attacks continue. It's a shame there isn't such a thing as a 'size-ism' relations officer.
