Speed camera action at last

A SPEED camera is to be installed just yards from the spot where a 13-year-old boy died two years ago.

Michael Weaver was hit by a car as he crossed the Kingsway dual carriageway in Burnage.

Nine other people have been killed or seriously injured since 2000 on the road, which is one of the main routes between south and central Manchester.

Another 67 people have been involved in minor collisions according to figures from Drivesafe, the organisation which installs speed cameras on behalf of the council.

Residents have campaigned for traffic calming on the road in an attempt to prevent any further accidents.

The news of the planned installation of the camera has been welcomed by Withington MP John Leech, who is the Liberal Democrat spokesman for transport in Parliament.

He said: "It is proven that reducing the speed of traffic reduces the number of accidents and makes them less likely to result in fatalities.

"A speed camera on Kingsway will discourage drivers from exceeding the current speed limit. This news is very welcome."

The news will also be welcomed by Michael's mother Amanda, who has also campaigned for traffic calming measures.

Following the tragedy, she told the South Manchester Reporter: "Unless something is done about it there'll be another accident."

The camera will be installed on the north-bound carriageway of Kingsway near its junction of North Bank Gardens and will capture drivers driving above the 40mph speed limit.

Claire Wightman, of Drivesafe, said: "We are extremely supportive of the installation of this new speed camera on Kingsway.

"Everyone felt it was imperative that something effective was done as soon as possible to remedy this issue.

"We have evidence proving that safety cameras reduce the number of people being killed and injured on our roads, and we are confident that this will also happen at this location on Kingsway."

I travel along Kingsway most days and I see that the main cause of accidents are pedestrians who do not use the marked crossings. Quite often it is possible to see children and the elderly crossing only a few yards form the traffic lights. I hope the speed cameras will also be used to prosecute jay walkers and cyclists who do not use lights.
