‘History Boy’ takes trip down memory lane

A WORLD famous movie director returned to his south Manchester roots to launch his feature film, The History Boys.

Nicholas Hytner, a former pupil at Manchester Grammar School, along with writer Alan Bennett and the stars of the film, visited the Fallowfield school for a question and answer session.

Fifty-year-old Nicholas is perhaps better known for his award-winning stage direction and is currently director of the National Theatre. The History Boys itself was first a huge hit on the London stage and has been seen by thousands of theatre-goers since it opened in 2001.

The History Boys focuses on the efforts of eight grammar school boys to get into Oxford and Cambridge in the 1980s. Nicholas, who himself went to Cambridge, was particularly excited about returning to MGS. He said: "I really only remember all the plays I appeared in, the orchestras I sang for and the many ruses I developed to avoid sport."

The event was part of Manchester Grammar School's fundraising for a proposed new drama centre, which will include a new theatre with seating on two levels and a dance and drama studio.
