Cricketers prepare for new season

17/ 4/2008

PLAYERS and officials at our local Manchester Association cricket clubs are praying for a change in the weather as they go into the first week of the season this Saturday.

Recent torrential rain has left many grounds behind on preparation, unlike last season which began in superb conditions, and giving ground staff many problems in pitch preparation.

All three of our clubs are now in the Premier Division following Whalley Range’s excellent season in 2007.

Last year saw Range return to the top flight with some impressive cricket throughout the season seeing them earn their reward as division one champions.

They begin their campaign with a tricky fixture at Bury, but evergreen skipper Paul Davies is confident that his young team will be among the frontrunners for the title.

Wythenshawe had a great season during 2007 and will be looking to repeat that this year as they open up with a match at Longley Lane against old rivals Swinton Moorside.

South West Manchester complete the local trio, and with the excellent draining quality of their Ellesmere Road ground seeing their pitch preparation well on schedule, will entertain Deane and Derby.
