Range record Surridge success

24/ 4/2008

WHALLEY Range showed their intent to make this another good season for the club as they won a close contest at Bury to set the early pace in the Surridge Cup.

Range dismissed the home team for 108 with Saleem Akram being the main contributor with four wickets.

However, Range also found runs hard to come by on a slow wickets and outfield and it needed some good grafting from Aftab Younis (22) and Waqas Malik (19) to steer then to 109-8.

Range’s seconds were also in a close encounter at Kingsbrook Road before beating Brooksbottom by two runs.

Range set a target of 153-8 with M Hussain (68), Brad Ransanmain and Mark Greenwood (16 each) the main contributors.

Brooksbottom kept in touch with the required rate and went into the last over needing eight to win, but they could only manage five with the Range bowlers sharing the wickets.

It proved to be a dismal start for South West Manchester as they were hammered by a huge margin at Deane and Derby.

The home team lashed a very impressive 231-5 before rolling over South West for a meagre 55.

South West seconds battled hard with a depleted team in the reverse fixture at Ellesmere Road.

Skipper Adam Watkins moved up the order and hit his maiden half-century for the club, finishing with 57 as South West made 143-7.

It was never going to be enough as the home team cruised to 144-6 with eight balls remaining.

Wythenshawe’s home game fell victim to a waterlogged pitch but their seconds enjoyed a good day at Swinton Moorside.

Brian Burgess (55), Adam Wardle (62 not out) and Ian Hilton (32) helped them reach 227-9 before Abdullah Kancal took 5-25 in Swinton’s 147-8.
