Derby day victory

8/ 5/2008

WYTHENSHAWE were nine-wicket winners when they faced local rivals Whalley Range last weekend.

Having won the toss and invited their visitors to bat first, Wythenshawe dismissed Range for 98 as fine spells of bowling from Matthew Smart (4-15) and Chris Miller (2-18) did the damage for the home side.

Ahmed top-scored with 34 for Whalley Range who saw Craig McCoy (40 not out) and Les Sposton (44 not out) make light work of the Wythenshawe reply.

Wythenshawe’s seconds made short work of Euxton’s batting as Ryan Burgess (4-11) reduced the home side to 84 all out.

Despite losing four wickets in reply, Wythenshawe were comfortable winners with Dean Grierson (25 not out) helping them to finish on 86-4.

Elsewhere, South West Manchester were victorious by 11 runs when they came up against Swinton Moorside.

Batting first on a slow wicket, South West closed their innings on 170 all out with only Khalid Mahmood (38) and Ash Imdad (22) making telling contributions.

The Swinton reply was always under pressure as Khalid Mahmood (4-24) and Raj Sivakumar (3-24) made life difficult for the visitors’ run chase reducing them to 159 all out in the final over of the game.

South West’s seconds looked to have enough runs on the board when they made 174 at Swinton thanks to innings from Sahail Ahmed (31), Steven Madden (23) and John Whitney (22).

However, with South West unable to take early wickets, the home side were always in control of the run chase which they made, comfortably ending on 177-5.

The final wicket fell to South West debutant John Whitney who finished with 1-2.
