Bad batting

3/ 7/2008

WYTHENSHAWE’S hopes of retaining their Manchester Association Premier Division title took a big step backwards with a 60-run defeat at Deane and Derby.

Although their overseas player Robin Chaudhry bowled a marathon spell to end with 6-50 and Leigh Sproston 2-20 as the hosts were all out for 175, failures with the bat were to prove costly.

A propensity for giving away their wickets cheaply manifested itself to leave Wythenshawe all out for a disappointing 115.

Adam Ward (26), Ian Habershon (27) and Colin Crowther (20) were the only Wythenshawe players to make an impact with the bat.

Their hopes of HC Smith Cup success then evaporated with a 92-run defeat at the hands of Swinton Moorside.

Fielding first, Wythenshawe saw their opponents compile 217-7 before they again fell short in reply, dismissed for 125.

There was also disappointment for Wythenshawe’s second team who were left hanging on for a draw against a Deane and Derby side which had batted first and reached 179-8 at the close of their innings.

Izzy Fernando and Phil Cook took the bulk of the wickets for Wythenshawe, ending with figures of 3-67 and 3-22 respectively.

Like the first team though, the Wythenshawe second string lacked a major innings in reply as they limped to 109-8.

Ian Jones, Lewis Crowther and Martin Leonard were their top scorers, each of them ending with 15.
