LAST Saturday’s derby between South West Manchester and Wythenshawe ended in a draw from a game where both sides needed the points for different reasons.

Batting first, South West made good use of the conditions to set a stiff target of 185.

Khalid Mahmood top-scored with 50 despite Colin Crowther checking the flow of runs with figures of 5-44 from nine overs.

Knowing that a major innings was required to give his side a chance of victory, Wythenshawe opener Paul Burrell bedded in as Chris Canning (21) and Ian Habershon (11) took them past the 100 mark in the 30th over.

Burrell and Leigh Sproston then upped the tempo, but once Burrell was out for 71, their momentum was halted and they ended on 170-8.

Najeeb Ahmad took 4-59 and Mahmood 3-30 as a draw proved to be a fair result.

The reverse game at Longley Lane was a close affair as Wythenshawe scraped a one-wicket victory chasing South West’s modest 111.

Runs were at a premium in bowler-friendly conditions as Chris Bradley (6-41) and Martin Leonard (4-23) did the business for Wythenshawe.

Dean Grierson made 41 in reply as Adam Watkins (5-30) and Mukhtar (3-47) set a possible victory up for South West.

Wythenshawe’s last pair came together with four runs required and it took a lusty blow from Lee Booth to take his team to victory.

Whalley Range had by far the better of their draw against Worsley at Kingsbrook Road.

Aftab Younis made an unbeaten 64 as Range made 181-5 when batting first, Waqas Malik adding 51 not out.

Hope’s 55 gave Worsley a sight of victory in reply, but his departure saw them shut up shop and finish on 139-6.

Luke Morley (3-7) and Vilas Cutty (2-64) had Range’s best bowling figures.
