Reigning Lancashire and Cheshire League champions Whalley Range extended their lead at the top of the Premier Division to five points with a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Spurley Hey stayed in second place after a 2-2 draw at Mellor.

A final flourish

Manchester Gregorians did the Manchester Football League proud as they won 1-0 in their Northern Counties FA Senior Cup semi-final against the East Riding FA CFA.

A strike from Eniola Owura booked a final date to be arranged against West Cheshire’s West Kirby FC.

Maine Road overcame the end of their five-game unbeaten run with victory over lowly Atherton LR at Brantingham Road.

They set about their visitors from the off as James Rothel saw a cross come close to sneaking under the crossbar before exchanging passes with Chris Hirst and Chris Crookes before shooting wide.

Tight at the top

The race for the Lancashire and Cheshire AFL Premier Division title still looks set to go to the wire after leaders and reigning champions Whalley Range were held to a 3-3 draw by lowly South Manchester.

Range were looking good as they led 3-1 at the break with Danny Heffernan (2), and Leon Hamilton netting with Azuka Otutu replying for South. Range stayed in control until Dave Hamnett received a red card. Danny Booth then reduced the arrears and a super strike from Nathan Coppin earned South a vital and deserved point.

Premier pacesetters are pulling clear

The two pacesetters in the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Premier Division are beginning to put daylight between themselves and their rivals after two vital wins.

Leaders Whalley Range were 4-1 winners over Spurley Hey with second-placed Govan Athletic beating Mellor 2-1.

Another weekend off

THERE was another blank week in the Altrincham and District Sunday League last week due to bad weather.

In outside cup competitions Sale FC are still fighting on three fronts as they are still in the last eight of the Manchester Shield along with Chorlton Beech.

Local clubs again hit by big freeze

THE Manchester Football League suffered a second successive total postponement of all of their league programme as clubs were looking to get back into action after the festive season.

The league are now taking applications from new clubs for the 2010-2011 season and they are now allowing applications from reserve teams from clubs in higher leagues.

Looking for title push

OLD Mancunians will be going into their New Year programme determined to push for their first Lancashire Amateur League Premier Division title.

Old Boltonians lead the way with a three-point lead over Howe Bridge and four ahead of Mancs, but with 16 games to play Mancs know that if they can maintain the form they have shown in the latter stages of 2009, they will be in the mix for the rest of the season.

The Football Association have presented outlines of plans for extension of their level seven section with some new categories giving a distinct opportunity for the league’s Premier Division sides to become part of the FA pyramid.

FLETCHER Moss Rangers’ under-nines’ Blues at last got some action on the pitch after several weeks of inactivity as they visited Wythenshawe Amateurs.

It took time for the team to get back in the routine but once they had settled several chances were created with a firm strike from Zeke Ame giving them the lead in the first period.

Inter-league side seeks new boss following Gill’s departure

THE Lancashire and Cheshire AFL are looking for a new manager for their inter-league team after Alex Gill decided to step down from the role and return to his duties with Hooley Bridge Celtic.

The team reached the last 16 of this season’s FA National Carlsberg Cup going down 5-0 to Cambridgeshire.

MAINE Road warmed up for the festive period as they secured a deserved point with a 2-2 draw at Ramsbottom United.

The result lifted the home team into second place but dropped Maine Road to seventh.

Longer break

ALL of the festive games in the Manchester Football League were postponed – even those who were scheduled to play on artificial pitches.

It meant a two-week break for our local clubs to reflect on the first half of the season and generally it is a positive look to the New Year for our top teams.

Cambridgeshire's cruise to victory

THE Lancashire and Cheshire League’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Carlsberg National Cup were ended in emphatic style by their Cambridgeshire counterparts.

Having had to make late changes, the Lancashire and Cheshire side were undone by two soft goals in the first 10 minutes before a third on the half-hour.

Late goal keeps Ammies at summit

WYTHENSHAWE Amateurs were made to fight all the way to the last five minutes before securing a vital Manchester League Premier Division point at Atherton Town.

Atherton had inflicted a rare defeat on the Ammies a few weeks previously with a much improved team and they generally had the better of the game after taking an early lead.
