Beechfield on brink of winning title

THE Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Premier Division title race took a significant step in the direction of Beechfield United without them kicking a ball.

Rochdalians were beaten 3-2 by South Manchester, while third-placed Old Trafford drew 3-3 against defending champions Denton Town.

Bedians remained in fourth spot after a 1-1 draw at Old Ashtonians who stay in relegation trouble.

Division one leaders Moston Brook and Old Strets were both without games, leaving the way open for Whalley Range to close the gap as they ran out 3-0 winners at Gatley.

At the foot of the table, Chorltonians continued their resurgence by completing the double over Eagle FC.

Parrs Wood Celtic dropped into the relegation zone after losing 1-0 to Stoconians while Trevor Kelly (two), Nathan Billingham, John Hall and Steve Knowles saw Burnage Metro come from 5-1 down to beat Irlam Steel.

Northenden-based division two leaders Govan Athletic took a step nearer the title as they took three points at Alkrington Dynamoes while New East Manchester’s match at Droylsden was postponed.

In division A, Whalley Range beat Hooley Bridge 3-2. Division C pacesetters Alkrington Dynamoes won 4-2 at Whalley Range, while Chorltonians beat Aldermere 2-0.

Chorlts’ A side lost 5-0 to Deans FC, Burnage Metro’s seconds lost 2-1 to Denton Town, while Metro B went down 9-3 against Moorside Rangers.

Bedians’ A side drew 1-1 with Hooley Bridge Celtic, only for the seconds to lose 2-1 at Mellor and the B team 5-1 against Newton Heath.
