Perfect preparation

3/ 4/2008

MAINE Road kept up their morale in readiness for their Vodkat League Cup final by coming from behind to defeat Nelson 3-1 in dire conditions at Brantingham Road.

Having gone behind to Barnyard’s 22nd minute piledriver, they did not have to wait long to get on terms as Jones slid home the equaliser four minutes later to leave the teams level at the break.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half when a neat finish from Luke Mack on 54 minutes gave Road a deserved lead.

Victory was sealed thanks to Kearney’s goal four minutes later before both teams and the officials had to endure strong winds and torrential rain for the rest of the game.

As for the Manchester Publicity Sunday League, a rain-affected weekend saw few games manage to survive as the weather once again took its toll on pitches at the business end of the season.

Among the games that managed to beat the conditions, Sale just edged Arches 2-1 in the Silver Jubilee Cup thanks to goals from Edwards and Roderick. Metcalfe replied for the defeated visitors.

With all Premiership games being called off, the spotlight fell on the lower divisions.

In another tight game, Inter Didsbury were beaten 3-2 by Cheadle Hulme Albion in division one thanks to Carl Scott (two) and Paul Gascoigne.

Two games went ahead in division two as Fallowfield United beat Green End Vets 4-1, Sharif El Arabi, Calum Hennegan, Joe Eaton and Pete Straker all on target.

The other game saw Manchester Vale beat Arya 9-5, Mellor and Hockey scoring four each for the hosts.

MANCHESTER Publicity League officials are looking for qualified referees. Anyone interested should send an email to them at mpslresults@yahoo.com
