Old Trafford are the odd ones out

THREE teams from division one of the Lancashire and Cheshire League make up the final four of this year’s Rhodes Cup.

The odd one out is Premier Division side Old Trafford who saw off Hooley Bridge Celtic 3-1.

Lenny Kinsella, Gabriel Caldwell (three each) and Craig Steven (two) gave Whalley Range an 8-0 win at Burnage Metro, while a close game saw Hollingworth OB defeat Old Stretfordians 3-2.

It was even closer in the local derby between Spurley Hey and Gatley which went to a penalty shootout, Gatley keeper John Newton the hero with two saves.

Premier Division action saw Hazel Grove keep up their run of good form with a 4-1 win over Old Standians.

Bedians were held to a 1-1 draw at Newton, Pete McDonald with their goal, while South Manchester’s relegation fate was virtually sealed with a 1-0 defeat against Old Ashtonians.

Division one leaders Moston Brook took another step towards promotion and the title with a 3-0 win over Parrs Wood Celtic.

Chorltonians continued their brave fight to avoid the drop with a hard-earned 2-1 victory, while Celtic’s seconds defeated Stoconians A 4-0.

Burnage Metro’s seconds exited the Wray Cup after a 1-0 loss to Alkrington Dynamos, although their A side won 3-2 at Abacus Media. However, Metro B went down 2-0 at Bedians and the C team lost 3-1 against Mellor C.

Whalley Range seconds kept their club on course for the Aggregate Trophy with a 3-1 win at Hazel Grove.

Range A won 3-2 at Droylsden Ams with Tony Lyons (two) and Martin McVarney on target, but Range B were beaten 3-0 by Old Stretfordians.

Dave Chapman’s first goal in seven years was consolation as Chorltonians B lost 4-1 at Old Ashtonians.
