Handy Andy gives New East trophy

1/ 5/2008

NEW East Manchester emerged victorious as they defeated fellow Lancashire and Cheshire League club Newton Heath to win the Manchester Amateur Cup.

It was the first time that two of the league’s teams had contested the final with New East the first division two side to take the title.

The game had finished 2-2, Wes Parnell and Michael Marshall netting for Newton Heath with Kebb Bhah (two) doing likewise for New East who then won on penalties thanks to two saves from Andy Kemp.

League action saw Old Trafford confirm second spot in the Premier Division with wins against Mellor (5-1) and Rochdalians (6-1), while South Manchester and Old Standians are marooned after defeats against Newton (1-0) and Denton Town (3-1) respectively.

In division one, Old Stretfordians moved level with Whalley Range in the fight for promotion as they defeated Moston Brook (3-2) and Irlam Steel (2-0) while Range were beaten 2-0 by Cheadle Hulme Villa.

At the other end of the table, Chorltonians continued their revival by recording a seventh consecutive victory, beating Newton Heath 3-1 thanks to goals from Andrew Pearce, Darrel Hadfield and Dwayne Maynard.

However, Chorlts’ depleted fourth team were beaten 8-1 by AFC Oldham despite taking the lead.

Colin Small’s double gave Burnage Metro a 2-0 win over Parrs Wood Celtic who went bottom in the process.

South Manchester’s seconds virtually wrapped up the division A title, beating Hazel Grove 4-1 and Beechfield United 5-0.

Whalley Range’s seconds are the only team who can catch South and they showed their resolve with an 8-0 demolition of Beechfield United, although Range’s B team went down 8-2 against Mellor.

The Hellawell Shield semi-finals featured an all-Burnage Metro affair with their B team gaining bragging rights over the C team by 3-2.

Metro’s seconds were 2-1 winners over Bedians following a 2-2 midweek deadlock with Mellor.

Midweek action saw the C team on top by 3-2 over Gatley.
