Monton on verge of title success

8/ 5/2008

MONTON Amateurs will make an immediate return to the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division as first division champions if they win their final game of the season at fourth-placed Chapel Town on Saturday, May 10.

They lie third in the table after winning 1-0 at near neighbours Fives Athletic at the weekend.

Fives are second from bottom but there was little to choose between the two sides on the day.

The plucky young Fives side impressed with their competitiveness and skilful football but their hearts were broken by a Tommy Walsh strike 10 minutes from time.

Walsh seized on some hesitancy in the Fives defence to score from close range.

Irlam dropped from third to sixth in the Premier Division table after losing 1-0 at home to third from bottom Hindsford.

Their reserve side, who are fifth in Division Two, drew 1-1 at sixth-placed Walshaw reserves after the original game between the two sides had been abandoned.

And Irlam’s A team stayed second from bottom in the fourth division table. They went down 2-0 at champions Stockport Georgians A despite good performances from man of the match Scott Hogan and Adam Batty.
