Day of drama

GREGORIANS’ hopes of lifting the Manchester League Premier Division title for the first time ended in despair after a last day of drama at the top of the table.

Victory at Atherton Town would have given Gregs the title having topped the league table for the bulk of the season, only for them to record a 3-2 defeat.

That left them relying on basement club Breightmet United defeating Wigan Robin Park but the latter cruised to a 4-1 victory which saw lift the title by two points.

Gregs’ seconds gained some scant consolation for the club as they won 2-1 at Springhead and the A team finished second in their division.

Wythenshawe Amateurs finished what was a largely transitional season in 12th place following a fine 3-1 win at Stockport Georgians.

However, there was no joy for Ammies’ seconds as they were beaten 3-0 in their encounter at Dukinfield Town.

Manchester Juniors finished their division one season with a 3-1 defeat at home to a promotion-chasing Avro outfit.

Although Juniors had a depleted side, they gave Avro a run for their money despite falling 2-0 behind by half-time.

Adam McMahon pulled a goal back in the second half, leading to a 10-minute spell where the Avro goal led a charmed life as Juniors twice struck the woodwork.

It was not to be though as Avro made it 3-1 in the final seconds, netting a penalty after Matt Johnston handballed a goalbound effort.
