South sign off by going to Town

15/ 5/2008

SOUTH Manchester may have finished at the foot of the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Premier Division but they signed off with a 3-2 win at Denton Town.

Azuku Atutu, Ian Rothwell and Badoo Drameh netted for a South team made to regret many odd-goal defeats during the season. However, they could still celebrate as their second team clinched the division A title as they drew 2-2 with Newton Heath while rivals Whalley Range lost 3-2 at Mellor.

Despite a 3-0 defeat at Abacus Media, Old Trafford confirmed runners-up status in their first top-flight season, Abacus ending their campaign in fourth spot.

With Whalley Range and Moston Brook having won promotion from division one, the main drama came at the other end of the table where Irlam Steel’s 2-1 win lifted them out of the bottom two, leaving Chorltonians and Parrs Wood Celtic in the basement positions.

With their place secure, Burnage Metro were able to relax but crashed to a 9-2 defeat against Hollingworth OB, their consolations coming from Chris McGreavey and Trevor Kelly.

The destiny of some cup competitions was decided in some close and thrilling finals.

Alkrington Dynamos’ seconds looked to be winning the Wray Cup at Trafford FC as they led Denton Town 2-0 going into the last 10 minutes, only for Denton to stage a late rally and force extra time, after which they came through 4-3.

It was also close in the Whitehead Cup final before Beechfield United B eased home 2-1 against Stoconians, while Hollingworth OB’s under-18s became the first holders of the Gordon Sutton Trophy as Scott Flanagan gave them a 1-0 victory over Tintwistle Villa.

Burnage Metro saw their A side draw 2-2 with Old Standians, while the C squad saw off Irlam Steel 3-1.
