A WEEK free from fixtures at the midway point of the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s centenary season gives clubs a chance to prepare for what promises to be one of the most exciting campaigns yet in all eight divisions.
Mellor and Old Trafford have set a hot pace in the Premier Division with both seeking their maiden top-flight title.
Still in with a shout of catching the top two are promoted duo Moston Brook and Whalley Range, while Hooley Bridge Celtic and Rochdalians have several games in hand and could both mount a significant challenge.
It is equally close at the other end of the table with several clubs looking to avoid the drop as Bedians’ recent revival has seen them exit the bottom two.
Division one has seen the lead change hands on several occasions with six points separating the top eight clubs, currently led by Govan Athletic and Alkrington Dynamoes.
As in the Premier Division, it is tight at the bottom with five clubs bidding to avoid the drop.
In division two, the race for the title sees three clubs looking to battle it out with New East Manchester and Milton joint top, although Hattersley’s games in hand could be crucial.
Mellor’s reserves have given their club a big lead in the battle for the SE Woollam Aggregate Trophy as they top division A, two points ahead of a Newton Heath side which has two games in hand.
Aldermere’s seconds share top spot in division B with Irlam Steel, with Deans FC and Old Trafford’s reserves on their heels.
Old Stretfordians’ thirds top division C with their main threat coming from Moorside Rangers’ second string.
Bedians’ thirds rule the roost in division D ahead of Mellor’s fourth team, while division E sees Moston Brook’s fourths and Aldermere’s fourths sharing top spot, ahead of Deans Youth’s thirds.
The ‘Respect’ programme also seems to be having a positive effect with referees complimenting clubs on their behaviour and attitude.
