A comfortable victory

28/ 2/2008

BROUGHTON Park routed North Lancs and Cumbria League strugglers Tyldesley last weekend, running out 62-0 winners in a one-sided contest.

The first try came when Steve O’Connor’s kick was collected by Adam Knight for a try in the corner.

Following 20 minutes of desperate tackling from the visitors, Park went over again when John Clifford took O’Connor’s pass to score under the posts.

Conor Mitchell and Pete MacMahon then crossed for scores as Park, seemingly scoring at will, opened up a 38-0 advantage at half-time.

A forward drive involving Clifford and Jon Knight created a try for Mark Poole before Ronan O’Brien was the next Park player to touch down.

Park then finished with two more tries to make the final score 62-0.

Park’s junior colts team showed their quality to defeat leaders Altrincham Kersal 20-14 in Halbro Junior Colts League A.

Jonnie Thomas’ penalty and a later try saw Park 8-7 ahead at the break, after which a converted try put them 15-7 up.

Although Altrincham scored a second converted try, Park’s third score of the afternoon was enough to give them victory.

Burnage made it a ‘magnificent seven’ by defeating Widnes 13-5 to give them a seventh straight victory and move them to within four points of leaders Wilmslow with five games remaining.

Having rejigged their starting line-up after injuries to James Knight and John Brown, Burnage opened with a ferocious first 15 minutes that forced three Widnes players off with injuries.

With the first half ending scoreless, Burnage’s patience paid dividends after the break when Sam Jennings gave them the lead with a penalty.

Jonny Scholes extended that advantage with a try before Ralph Lawson soon crossed to put Burnage 13-0 ahead.

Widnes reduced their deficit when Andy Riley crashed over, but Burnage were able to keep the score as it was and keep on course for at least a play-off spot, if not the title should things go their way with the season drawing to an end.

Having lost 15-6 at Kirkby Lonsdale, Didsbury Toc H gave a good account of themselves before losing their Lancashire Trophy match 50-19 at Leigh.

After conceding an early converted try, Toc H drew level when debutant Bailey crossed for a try converted by Pete Davies.

Although they worked hard in defence, Didsbury conceded another four tries before the break despite seeing Mike Hyde cross for their second score.

A tighter second half brought three tries for the hosts, although Didsbury scored the try of the game just before the final whistle when Dave Foster scored, Davies with the extras.
