Duo's fortunes differ

BURNAGE RUFC secured a play-off tie at Rossendale this Saturday by defeating Wilmslow 24-0 last weekend.

Chris Mort gave them the lead with a try converted by Sam Jennings, but despite having Nick Scholes sinbinned, Burnage held out before Stuart Oldham’s try and Jennings’ conversion made it 14-0 at the break. They extended their lead to 19-0 when a lineout and drive ended with Peter O’Sullivan’s first try of the season.

James Knight rounded off the win with the fourth try of the afternoon after more good back play.

Didsbury Toc H’s relegation fate appears to have been sealed after losing 17-10 to fellow strugglers Oldham.

Dave Hoare’s try, converted by Pete Davies, put Toc H ahead before both sides then swapped penalties. Leading 10-3 going into the final minutes, Didsbury were pegged back when a series of penalties ended with Oldham scoring a converted try.

The impetus was suddenly with Oldham who scored the match-winning try five minutes later after a break from inside their own half.

Didsbury must now wait to see the result of the game between De La Salle and Wigton. If De La Salle lose, Didsbury will play a rearrange game against Rossendale knowing a win will see them leapfrog De La Salle to a potentially safe league position.
