Looking to make a splash in Beijing
20/ 3/2008
GREAT Britain water polo captain Craig Figes is combining his preparation for the London Olympics with completing his teacher training at Manchester Grammar School.
The 29-year-old is aiming to spearhead Britain’s assault on the 2012 Olympic title, while still hoping to lead his team at this year’s Games in Beijing.
Figes is at MGS on the PGCE work placement scheme, combining that with his training as the British squad is based at Manchester’s Aquatic Centre.
He said: "We have not qualified for Bejing and I’ll be 33 by the time of the London Olympics; the old man of the team but still hopefully in line for selection.
"Although we qualify automatically for the Olympics, the British Olympic Association has stipulated we must prove we could be medal contenders before they ratify our place in the tournament.
"This season we have already come sixth in the European Championship, which is our best performance for 12 years, so we are aiming to continue to improve and to make the grade.
"Water polo is often compared to rugby in water and you certainly need to be physically strong and have excellent hand to eye coordination."
