Lessons in leadership

27/ 3/2008

WORLD champion gymnast Beth Tweddle was the special guest as 100 students from schools in Wythenshawe and South Manchester took part in a sports leadership and volunteering course.

The event, at Wythenshawe’s Lifestyle Centre, saw students from school years 10 and 12 trained in sports leadership skills with a view to undertaking voluntary service in local schools and community sports clubs.

It is part of the Government’s ‘Step into Sport’ strategy, designed to train up young people who will be able to help improving the quality and quantity of opportunity available in physical education, school and community sport.

Event organiser Dominic Maguire said: "All those who took part gained a great deal from the day. They were certainly inspired by Beth who gave them great food for thought with her outline of her life in sport which has had many setbacks from which she has recovered superbly to be a great example to all young people."
