Rowing pair are making a splash

MANCHESTER Grammar School’s young rowers are making waves in the sport with Joshua Goswell and Alex Pavitt both representing the North West region.
Experienced oarsman Joshua was part of the J-16 quad, while the rapidly developing Alex was in the J-14 quad, racing against the cream of Great Britain’s young rowers from 12 regions.
Joshua, who trains with the Warrington Club and Alex, who trains with Agecroft Club, are part of a resurgence in rowing in the North, with the sport traditionally dominated by clubs and schools in the South.
Joshua, who has ambitions to represent Great Britain in the lightweight section, said: “We have all been inspired by the generation of (Steve) Redgrave, (Matthew) Pinsent and (Kelly) Holmes and have seen just what can be achieved.”
Recognised as one of the country’s top technical young rowers, Josh added: “It’s a tough sport and there is no alternative but hard work and relentless training.”
Alex has only been rowing for 12 months, but has immediately made an impact with his natural talent and now has an ambition to row in the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.
He said: “It’s not just a sport, it becomes a way of life and there is a great spirit among all the rowers on the river bank.”
