Team of the Week: South Manchester Football Club

26/ 6/2008

SOUTH Manchester FC are one of the oldest clubs in the area and have played in the Lancashire and Cheshire AFL for the past 94 years.

This season they have enjoyed their move to their new base at Chorlton Sports Club on Hardy Lane, which is just half a mile from their home of many years on the superb Christie Playing Fields, sadly sold some years ago for commercial development.

Ups and downs

While their first team struggled to preserve their Premier Division status, the second team set off the season in great fashion and set a club record by winning their opening nine games and since then they have another club record for clean sheets.

Apart from the odd blip they cruised to the Division A title - the first time that the club has ever won this trophy, although they have won the Wray Cup and other divisional titles.

Player manager Dave Baker said: "Nicky McCartan and Mark Wright have plundered bags full of goals but essentially this has been a real team effort.

"We are fortunate to have such a pro-active and dedicated committee at the club which has given us a sound base to work from and we have enjoyed playing at our new facilities at Chorlton Sports Club."

I can recall playing against South Manchester back in the mid to late sixties at Hough End and at Christies playing fields. What a sad day it was when the developer 'STOLE' this piece of land what once was owned by the Federation of boys clubs. I played for North Withington A.F.C. who were also members of the Lancs & Cheshire league. South Manchester obviously are still competing in that league whereas 'NORTH' moved on to the Manchester League.Other clubs I can remember playing at the narrow superb pitches at Christies were West Didsbury,East Chorlton,Rusholme,Craighurst Villa and West Meade. Congratulations to all the people at South Manchester especially for keeping their flag flying for so long and may it well continue.
