CHORLTON Golf Club hosted a field of nearly 200 players from the five Mersey clubs, for the Mersey Bowl at Barlow Hall.

The weather was perfect and the course was in pristine condition as the home players soon put up a string of fine scores to cruise to an easy victory with runners-up Withington nine points adrift of Chorlton.

Homesters Steve Thompson and Debbie Wilson set the pace with a top individual score of 41 points in the mixed foursomes format and they were given solid support by Tony Parsonage and Jeanette Freeman (40). John Doodson, Gwen Galley, Kenneth Williams and Heather Gillon scored 37, while Ged and Lesley Keegan and Megan and Mike Molloy scored 36 for a final total of 227.

Withington’s top pairs of Simon and Sally Andrew and Paul Lilley and Marie McNeil, both scored 37 to put their team into the runners-up slot with 218.

Didsbury were in third place with 208, with Ian Swindells and Jane Ridley leading their team scores with 40 points. Fourth place went to Northenden, who scored 201, with Cammie Stewart and Joan Birchall as their top counters.

Last year’s winners Sale were in last place on 193, with Colin Howie and Ann Lowis their top scorers with 36. Sale captain John Stubbs handed the trophy over to Peter Parmeshwar and Ina Aspinall, the Chorlton Captain and Lady Captain.

The only disappointment for Chorlton was the failure of three of their winning pairs to attend the presentation ceremony.

Chorlton’s men played the fourth round of the Harry Andrews Aggregate and the top score of the day came in division two from Paul Hunt with a 66, which left him clear of John Kelly (67) and Sean Hunt (68).

Top man

Steve Shufflebotham was the top man in division one with 67, two ahead of Mauriace Lynch, Peter Johnson and Paul Dulker-Parker.

Chris Ruthven also posted 67 to win division three from Colin Burke, John Logie and Mick Telfer, who all scored 70.

Chorlton’s Jane Sellors, Clair Daniel, Debbie Wilson and Lyn Field enjoyed a good day at Vale Royal Abbey in the CCLGA Quad Am where they finished in second place with 94 points.

Withington’s latest summer medal had Pat McKendry on 66 to win division one by a shot from Colin Webb and Kevin Hawkins.

David Evans won a card play-off on 68 from Ian Scott, Steve Kelsall and Jim Doyle in division two with Keith Bentley also needing a cpo on 65 to take division three from Roy Jackson.

A midweek medal at Withington had Andy Dunn in charge with 65 from Phil Hill (66), Andy Hughes (67) and Steve Watson (68).

Withington’s Mixed Pairs won their local derby against Northenden in the Manchester Alliance Archie Preston Trophy 5-2 to make the last 32 pairs.

Didsbury’s Mixed pairs played the latest round of the Roy Buckley Bowl and in-form Ian Prosser and Jenny White led in the Port division with an impressive 45 points from Peggy and John Haslam and Trevor and Sandra Holmes, both 40.

In division two Ray and Judith Howarth were the stars with 43 points, one clear of Brian and Ros Chapman and David and Betty Wilson.

Didsbury’s men were in Midweek medal action and the divisional winners were Steve Wilkinson on 68 and Anthony Dean on 65.

Alan Baldock was Top Vet with 68 and Robert Macros earned an honourable mention for his 68.

Northenden’s men enjoyed their Invitation Day and noone more than P Conner and his guest G Hill as they won a cpo on 45 points from Alan Box and C Caine for top spot.

Also in the frame were D Latham and D Moore (44).
