The jack of all trades

CHORLTON-BASED Trafford Athletics Club saw their ladies team take third place in last weekend’s UK League match at Sportcity.

The build-up had been less than ideal for team manager Joanne Harding, whose side had been chopped and changed throughout the week, up until the morning of the event.

However, it all came right on the day as her athletes battled all the way to end the day in third position.

They were helped by athletes prepared to compete in more than one category, even if it was not their specialist discipline.

Katie Jones did not compete in her main event, but was still able to rack up the points in the 400m, 200m, sprint hurdles and the 4 x 100m relay.

Under-20 competitor Jackie Fairchild competed well in the 800m and 1,500m, while Jemma Kelly and Elaine Cank earned a large points tally with their performances in the hammer, shot and discus.

Sue Moncrieff and Kay Humberstone again dominated in the high jump with Sarah Adams looking comfortable when taking top spot in the 400m hurdles.

The team’s winners on the day were: Sarah Adams (400m hurdles A, 59.55); Katie Jones (100m hurdles B, 14.38); Sue Moncrieff (high jump A, 1.84m); Kay Humberstone (high jump B, 1.70m); Jemma Kelly (discus B, 41.37m).

Runners-up were: Jo Dawes (800m A, 2:10.26); Julia Leventon (3,000m A, 10:15.32); Nisha Desai (400m hurdles B, 62.40); Vicky Garrard (100m hurdles A, 14.32); Jemma Kelly (hammer B).

The final match takes place at Copthall on Saturday, August 2.

TRAFFORD’S men moved into a promotion spot following second place in their BAL National One match at Carlisle. They were edged out by league leaders City of Sheffield and are now a point ahead of third-placed Gateshead.
