Perfect pitch

17/ 7/2008

TWO local players were among the England team which ensured at least one European title for the country this year.

Nicola Duerden and Pete Nightingale were part of the England squad which captured the European Slowpitch Championships in Southampton over three days last week.

Sale-based Nightingale and Duerden, who lives in Fallowfield, helped the 2006 champions to victory in the competition which also featured sides representing the Czech Republic, Ireland, Jersey and Slovenia.

Great Britain won all of their eight games, scoring 159 runs and only conceding 36, before defeating the Czech Republic and Ireland in the finals.

Duerden said: “Great Britain were the favourites to regain the title. We had some tough, close games, both in the group games and finals against the Czech Republic and Ireland.”

There will be no time for rest though as Duerden and Nightingale are bidding to bring success back to Manchester.

She explained: “We’ll be heading off to the Single Sex Nationals in Birmingham with the Manchester representative team in the hope of bringing back more silverware.”
