Wacs let it slip

LACROSSE: Old Waconians' hopes of joining the top four elite were again given a sharp shock as they went down to their biggest defeat of the season at Wilmslow Road to Mellor.

While Wacs have been comfortable in wins over the North of England premier league's lesser lights this term, was their fourth defeat of the season against the top four teams and puts their ambitions into perspective as they crashed 20-8.

For much of the game there was little between the teams and Mellor just had the edge going into the last quarter at 12-7 ahead.
But Wacs imploded in the last quarter, conceding eight goals and managing a mere consolation in reply.

Steve Shanahan was head and shoulders above the rest of his Wacs team-mates and he also got forward to net twice.

Andrew Powell also scored three with Nick More (2) and American Korie Powers the other Wacs marksman.

John Robinson, the Old Waconians coach, admitted his side had struggled to contend with champions Mellor.

"We played alright in the first-half," said Robinson. "But we just didn't turn up in the second-half - we were not very good."
