Lara relishes new role

12/12/2002

BASKETBALL: Former Manchester Magic star Sergio Lara has hung up his boots to concentrate on taking the game into schools.

Lara has been with Magic for more than three years but is now putting his energies into promoting and developing basketball, and was delighted with the response received at Levenshulme Girls High School.

"I go to schools with the aim of publicising the tremendous facilities on offer in south Manchester at the John Amaechi Centre, which caters for all levels of ability." said Lara.

"The coaching sessions focus on the basics with skills and games introduced in an enjoyable way.

"Many children have difficulties in getting to the centre so I am offering a free programme, funded by Awards for All and New Opportunities, and if the youngsters get a liking for the sport they can then take it up more seriously at the centre.

"The girls at Levenshulme typify the enthusiasm for the sport in schools."

Anyone wishing to take advantage of the scheme should contact the centre based at Whalley Range High School.
